One of the keys to Achieving Massive Goals is executing Extreme Focus

01 February 2010

Sometimes when you are striving to get somewhere, you often times don’t really know what you are doing, and through a series of trial and error, you get somewhere you are happy with. This would probably involve making mistakes and correcting them, and throughout all these trials, you would have learnt some really valuable lessons.

Recently I rediscovered something which I recognised as a key to my past success. It is only through this realisation now, that I can become aware of it, and apply it with volition in the future.

What is this key I hear people asking; well it’s the power of Extreme Focus.

When I say this, I don’t mean focussing on something 95%, I mean focussing on this 100%, even when you are sleeping. You might think it ridiculous to even be focussing on something when you are sleeping, but I can assure you, you can teach your mind to do this.

Don’t do it, Don’t make New Years Resolutions

01 January 2010

Really, the quickest way to break your resolutions is to make them. I read an article about some research done in the UK which concluded that 88% of people break their resolutions within 2 weeks, and rest trickle off over time.

Do you really want to set yourself up for failure? If so, where else in life are you doing this? New Years resolutions are your own personal fail list. We’ve all done it before in good faith, however was there ever one that succeeded? Ask yourself the honest question, why do you still make them?

I stopped several years ago because I understood that if you want to do something, and you really did want to do it, then nothing would stop you from doing it, and nothing would be needed to motivate you to do it. You see, resolutions are kind of like a way to tell other people that it’s ok to fail, when really it isn’t.

When you change your environment, you will inevitably change

22 November 2009

I have a number of friends who have moved overseas and it’s really interesting to talk to them about changes they have made in order to adapt to where their new environment is. To give you a quick update, I’m now in Sydney and I have 2 really good friends of mine who have made a new life here and I’m looking forward to catching up properly with them later on today.

I’ve come here after a gruelling and totally amazing 7 days training in Fiji at this Billionaire Bootcamp seminar I have mentioned several times before. This was one of the most intensive things I’ve done and it truly challenged my perception of the world and what is possible when you look at the bigger picture.

One of the challenges we faced was a classic “The Apprentice” style game where we had to trade items from a paperclip up to as high a value as possible. We had 2 hours and a whole lot of intention as we set out into the unknowing public and after setting up the plan and idea we forged ahead. I was made the team leader and I learnt a lot about leading too. I needed to be more assertive. Though I had some nice ideas on how to play big, there were people who were only looking to play a small game and my voice got lost in the foray. All due respect to them for going out to get single upward trades because we still came back with over $300 worth

Growing beyond your Pool

14 October 2009

I’m thinking back to a movie I’ve seen a couple of times called Big Fish. In this movie, the protagonist is a character that finds himself looking for more in life and embarks on a journey to discover the world around him. One quote which I’m thinking of in particular goes like this: “Has it ever occurred to you that maybe you're not too big? That maybe this place is just too small?”, Edward Bloom, the main character asks this question of Karl, a giant.

At the times when we become seekers and begin on our own journeys, we start to expand our experiences in life and consequently our minds expand. Even a simple holiday to an unknown culture will inevitably expand your mind through the experiences you will gain from being in that foreign land.

One of the most difficult things about moving forward in life is that more often than not, there are people holding you back. In fact, it is often the case that there are many more people holding you back, than there are those pulling you forward. I’ve heard this from many people, and I’ve personally experienced this as well.

It’s never about what you can get, but what you can give, Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was released because we are capable of compassion and that’s our gift

25 August 2009

There’s been quite some fuss over the release of Mr Megrahi due to his terminal prostate cancer. It would seem that many people disagree with the decision and think that he should not have been released.

Why so many people are intent on getting as much grief as they can from this? What does keeping him locked up in a jail actually achieve in the long run? Is it supposed to send a message to those responsible that they shouldn’t mess with us because ultimately even in death we would not listen or bend. Truly, keeping him in jail doesn’t achieve anything at all.

Megrahi was released on compassionate grounds and that decision was made not because of political pressure, not because of media or public pressure, it was made, because we have the choice to make it, and even more important, because we are capable of giving him these last days as we are more than just jailers, we are compassionate and forgiving people.

Trying is not doing, doing is doing

22 August 2009

How many times in a day do you think you will hear from yourself or from other people, the word “try”?
- Oh, when are you going to get that report done for me?
- I’ll try and get it done by the end of the day.
- Are you going to win that contract with X?
- I’ll try my best to.
- Darling, can you book some tickets for the Lion King tonight.
- I’ll try to get hold of some later.

Life doesn’t work this way, if you always end up trying, you’ll never end up doing. Think of it like this, do you only try to wash your face in the morning, or do you only try to make a cup of coffee, or do you only try to read a book?

What does it mean when you talk about paying your dues?

08 August 2009

Why is it that there is this overwhelming notion that it takes a certain amount of effort before something is achieved? I was on the way back from central London after hosting a travel meetup event and I overheard a group of people talking about a friend of theirs who had “paid their dues” and thus “deserved” the reward he was getting.

This got me thinking, why did they believe this to be true? What was it in their thinking that meant they had associated reward and fulfilment with the fact that a certain amount of time and/or effort had to be exerted first?

It was through my understanding that their perception of this notion that time served equals reward had been taught to them by the experiences and learnings they had whilst they were growing up.

In fact it was Dr Morris Massey’s work on values which described 3 major periods where our core notions are created.

Be a humble inquisitor

19 June 2009

The other night I was driving along speaking to a film making friend of mine and we stumbled upon the aptly named term The Humble Inquisitor. Sounds like a character out of some spoof Monty Python-esq type comedy, and it could well be, but what I was pointing across at the time, was how to win friends and learn from people who are more knowledgeable than yourself.

In life, no one knows everything, and when you think you’ve reached a point in your life, career, relationship where you know it all, then that is the time you need most to go and seek out someone who might know more.

Dress well and feel good, cultivate the attitude of excellence

12 May 2009

I get a lot of comments from people for my impeccable style and fashion sense (ahem, lol), whether they are right or wrong doesn’t matter. What does matter is that I feel great about the way I look, and if that means dressing well all the time, then I will do that.

The reason behind this blog post is simple; it’s all about cultivating that attitude of excellence, and putting yourself in peak state all the time. One way of doing this is just by dressing well.

Just by feeling good about yourself and looking good, you are immediately put in a state of confidence about your appearance, and this confidence will transmute into your behaviour and also into whatever activity you are doing.
