A bit of a late starter in terms of traveling. That's what this section is all about. My real first traveling experience was probably to Istanbul, way back in the day with one of my school friends also called Ed.
Even after that, I hadn't really gotten the bug to travel, since as a kid the only trips I did were really boring coach tours with the parents, or family trips back to Hong Kong to visit relatives. Exotic as it might sound, Hong Kong for me has never really been a holiday since every time I'm overwhelmed with relatives and being the British cousin.
A friend introduced me to winter holidays back in the year 1999. It was my first taste of a ski holiday. I had no idea what impact it would have on me because since that trip, I have been obsessed with skiing and now snow boarding. There's nothing like it, so if you haven't tried, I highly recommend it.
My first real hiking experience came late in 2001 when on the spur of the moment I decided to make a trip to Egypt. This trip gave me a taste for proper exploring. It involved rock climbing, snorkeling, boat trips, hikes, and a lot of ancient Egyptian culture. I loved it. I will always remember that trip for all that happened, the friends I made, and the most violent catamaran ride of my life!
Since then I've really been up for activity based holidays. I'm not one to sit around on a beach. One of the holidays I took shortly after that was to the Picos mountains in Northern Spain. That was also great fun as I experienced absailing, coasteering, kayaking and canyoning, amongst many other things.
I've also experienced a tandem skydive, which for the most part was the single most exhilarating experience ever. Even though the free fall of over 6000ft lasted for only a minute and a half, to me it felt like a lifetime.
In time my ambitions are to climb Mount Kilamanjaro, reach the mystical Machu Picchu, dive with dolphins and observe gorillas in the wild. Not too much to ask for I hope!
